Sir Minato. [ Ket says, out of the blue. It really is out of the blue, because Ket's been unusually quiet this evening. Contemplating. But now he's done contemplating, so he'll plop himself down cross-legged in front of his sleepy, cryptic friend, regardless of what Minato is doing. ]
Why do people insult their friends? I mean, not in a bad way. It's like... like they're insulting each other to show affection. It's weird, Sir Minato. Not bad-weird or good-weird, just weird. I don't get it.
[The previous silence has been more than welcome since Minato appreciates the quiet, but he does look up from his cup of noodles when he's asked that question.]
It's a guy thing, I suppose. Mmm...men were the ones who usually went to war in the past, so they'd insult each other because it's hard for them to admit that they're worried, since anyone can die at any time.
[ Another dinnertime, another case of Ket being oddly silent. When he finally speaks up, his usual chipper tone is missing. His voice isn't sad, exactly. Just thoughtful. Subdued. ]
Sir Minato, what does the word 'haven' mean to you? Just wondering. [ For no reason at all. ]
[ Between exploring the subsection of the jungle Rinne had been banished to and waking up to find his... well, it was breakfast, he guesses. He'd almost completely forgotten about the explosion before everybody was split up.
Rinne had been helping out others, scrambling around to find his roommates before it was too late, and he had been whisked elsewhere. Now that everyone was awake and back, his first order of business was to make sure everyone was safe and sound. Hence why, he's staring a hole into Minato right now. ]
Arisato. [ This is how a concerned friend sounds. Keeping it cool, for the most part. Still, it's a little weird that the first one he's found fine is Minato. Did Ket immediately run off to work or something? ]
Rokudo-san...good morning. [Minato's savoring his breakfast when Rinne shows up, and aside from nursing a cold and still looking pale after a day's worth of sleep he's totally fine.
Physically speaking, that is. Excuse him while he samples some more of the yogurt.]
[Aside from being dunked into trash and only having just showered to clean himself thoroughly, among other things:]
Yeah. Did you see Mitsuru-senpai on the way?
[Communicating over text has its benefits, such as allowing Minato to not be overwhelmed by the thought of seeing another person he'd never thought he'd see again- it's also easier for him to match Shinjiro's text in tone than it is to chat in person, and he'd rather meet them both together.]
Like I have a headache. [He's also been waking up feeling tired without knowing why and there's the occasional chill, but the headache is what has been bothering him the most.]
Something up, Dipper-kun?
Edited (Upon reflection, 'kun' sounds more accurate) 2015-12-08 07:27 (UTC)
You're acting strange, Kaoru-san. I don't think there's much to self-discover outside of the city and the Major can take care of himself, or is he sick too?
[To say Minato finds this text confusing is an understatement.]
[ Exact date: shortly after this party begins to break up.
It's worn late into the evening, and festivities are finally beginning to wind down. Many of the participants are drunk and need more than a little help getting home. Kaz in particular seems to have headed off with Hiro, despite earlier promises (threats? promises? something, that's for sure) of all of them going home together. Yu is still stone cold sober himself and could get home with no problems. But he has something else to worry about.
Someone else.
He'd come here at Minato's behest, after all. And now he'll get Minato home.
By now they've made their way out of the lounge and out onto the streets of Cerealia. If their clothes are still a little damp, well, they'll probably live. Yu's got one of Minato's arms pulled over his shoulders, and he'll walk slow and steady. ]
Uh...somewhere in front of you, I think. [It says something about Minato's level of inebriation that he manages to stumble on his feet even being supported by Yu as he points vaguely at what he thinks is supposed to be the Residential District.
Even that's an improvement over his condition just fifteen minutes before this, bent over a sink and throwing up what feels strongly of bad ideas and regrets about downing too much alcohol at once. Drying his clothes had turned out to be a bust too, and the night air is just cold enough to make him sneeze.]
Thanks for walking me back...and to think I invited you to enjoy yourself, Narukami-san.
[It'd taken him a bit to really work up the nerve to bother texting Minato. After the things the other boy had said a few days ago, he was unsure how to approach it before he finally rolled his eyes and punched out a few words.]
[Kazuya punctuated his words with a gentle knock on Minny's bedroom door with his free hand, the other balancing a small cooking tray that he had repurposed to carry Minny's plate and drink. It was a full day since the wall had been sealed up, stemming the ghost-tide and leaving Minny exhausted, and Kazuya had felt the need to check up on his friend to make sure he hadn't expired during the night. Or, well, okay, he'd been doing that anyway, sticking his head in at random times during the night, but the truth was Kazuya was craving some social interaction. It was hard, upholding a self-imposed social exile, and Minny didn't ask questions when Kaz had been acting pretty damn suspicious, so it was a safe bet.
And hey, if things got awkward, Kaz could outrun Minny, so, y'know, this plan was good]
[Minato's still tired from helping to seal the wall especially as he had lent something more than the powers he mentioned to the group, but he's awake at the time when Kaz knocks against the door, processing it only seconds after as he's been listening to something else while looking up at the ceiling.
He's become less reliant on music as a whole after starting to get out there and making friends, but the sweet strains of a lone voice singing in accompaniment to a piano resonates with him the way few people can, and he only stops the music to get up when the smell of something delicious reaches him.]
Still breathing, Kaz. [While there's issues Minato would never discuss with his friend as he's only too aware that people didn't tend to take well to his various ideas concerning death, Kaz's lack of tact is something he finds refreshing in the other as it meant that he didn't need to make much of a pretense either.] You can come in.
[ He thought about doing this the day before. But the day before, he had a hangover, an apartment full of Dipper and Yosuke, and a heart full of feelings.
He needed a day to just kind of deal.
But he's a direct kind of guy, and he doesn't let it sit too long before he decides he needs to at least say something. ]
[ There's a laugh in his voice. It's unusual enough as it is for him to call instead of text, and it's also fairly late into the evening. It sounds like he's out somewhere, judging by the ambient sounds that his CereVice is picking up. And he sounds-- ]
[ He knows what his CereVice told him. Searching the level desperately had yielded him nothing. And now that he's out it's the very first thing on his mind. He hasn't even left the entertainment district, standing there with his sword in his hand.
Yu-san. [Minato's on the move and that might explain why there's a delay in his next response, but he knows that's not the real reason why he's stalling.
He didn't know back then why he had hesitated to commit to a relationship- maybe it was fast but he hadn't cared back at home and it's only in returning after being sent back (And dying, he adds) that he realizes losing something hurts.
None of that is said of course in his next text, still wanting to know how Yu's been faring in the time he's been gone.] How have you been?
[Minato has a vague and yet sinking feeling that he's not going to like this, and the only reason why he's not making an excuse to avoid it is that it's Yu, someone for whom needing to talk was never about something trivial.]
[ In and out like the wind. No trace, no fuss, no mess. That's how he likes to operate; not leaving any footsteps to show who came before or after.
Unfortunately, that's how he likes to pay a visit, too. So there he is, sitting on a chair in Minato's room at night, completely uninvited, when the young man walks in from wherever he'd come from.
[Minato's honestly thankful he has an intact bedroom left after the fiasco a few days back, even if there's scorch marks on some of the walls and a large hole where a wall used to be.
All things considering he's not even surprised to see Saiduq waiting for him when he walks in after getting up for a glass of water. That had been trying, and he's noticeably a little sluggish in his movements as he walks back to his bed to settle down.]
You look well, Saiduq. Something on your mind? [The question's asked inquisitively, as if Minato knows he wouldn't be here without reason.]
[ Things have been ... awkward since everything went quiet again. He and Yosuke are barely speaking, and there's been a great deal of work to do across the city even while school and one of his jobs aren't really ... happening right now. He's been searching for distractions, ways to keep himself busy, because being busy is a state he feels comfortable in. It keeps him from thinking too much.
He's not even in the park for a stroll or anything so leisurely. He's just cutting through it on the way back to his apartment building.
It really stood to reason he'd run into Minato again eventually.
Yu just wasn't expecting to see him walking a dog across the park. He stops dead in his tracks, staring at ... the other boy (friend? ex-boyfriend? god) and internally warring with himself over what to do.
His Shadow had been cruel. But, apparently, not wrong.
You used me to make yourself happy.
I did.
How is he supposed to cope with that?
Still ... he can't let this pass. Shadows are cruel... and his hadn't had a "real self" to be cruel to, so all that darkness had gone out into the world instead. At people who didn't deserve it.
And Minato didn't deserve that, no matter how hurt Yu felt. All he'd done was hurt Minato too. Reflecting on Minato's face, his actions at that time... he knew the damage he'd done. An eye for an eye ... that wasn't how he wanted to live his life.
With a burning feeling in his chest, Yu raises his voice just enough to be heard as Minato comes closer. ]
Minato-san.
[ His expression is carefully composed, though touched with a certain kind of sadness. ]
[Minato's been doing both anything and nothing since being discharged, for the moment pre-occupying himself with taking care of Koromaru after finally checking out one of the initial job offers he had been given. Being a busboy wasn't the highest-paying of jobs and that it had been offered by CERES left a bitter taste in his mouth, but he figures that he might as well help out where he can.
It's Koromaru that notices Yu first, hearing the sound of footsteps and barking once when he sees the other boy.] Something wrong, Koromaru? [He can't see Yu from where he's standing, going a few steps forward with Koromaru padding along beside him before seeing and hearing Yu call out to him.]
Arf! [Koromaru comes to a stop when Minato does, head cocked in Minato's direction as if he's wondering about their relationship. For Minato's part he looks as calm as usual, but there's a certain stiffness in the way he looks down at Koromaru and then directly at Yu that suggests he's anything but well, physically and emotionally.] Yu-san. ...How have you been?
